  • Credit requirement is minimum 1 credit and maximum 12 credits per semester (and Thesis Advising).
  • In order to be eligible for a scholarship, you must take at least 6 credits.
  • Most International students in this department are awarded the Academic Achievement scholarship every semester (Approximately 40% remission of tuition). To be eligible, you must earn 6 credits or more with a GPA (Grade Point Average) 3.5 or better in the previous semester. You are also eligible if you have earned 80% of the graduation credits with a GPA of 3.5 or better

  • GPA of 3.0 (equivalent to the letter grade ‘B’) or better must be maintained to finish your course.
  • Thesis Advising course (1 credit ) is required to take at least once after the first semester and before the graduation.
  • Research ethic and Thesis course (1 credit) is required to take at leaset once before the graduation.
  • You need to take at least 1 class per core area (i.e., each incumbent professor) of your academic track (linguistics or literature).

④ Korean language requirement for international students
  • International students are required to take one Korean Level Test that is available in the first week of every semester. The results of the examination determine whether or not students take courses in the Korean language. The registration requirement of the Korean language class is none for the Level High proficiency, one class for the Level Mid, and two classes for the Level Low proficiency.

2. Qualifying Exam of Thesis

For admission to candiacy, you must pass the written exam on three or four core subjects in your academic track (i.e., linguistics or literature). In addition, you need to submit the English language test score with certain proficiency level, given below.

    The exam subjects must include the academic field of your own specialization and all core academic areas taught by incumbent professors in your academic track (i.e., syntax and grammar area, phonetics and phonology area, semantics and discourse area).

    • You should submit the certification (TOFLE, TOEIC, TEPS, or IELTS) and application form in February or August tothe E.L.L. office. (Please check the dates of registration.)
    • International students should submit the test score to the International Office, as well.
    • The students from an English-speaking country must take TOPIK or 2nd language test in KNU. *Please ask Rachel.

4. Thesis publication requirement for Master’s degree (Choose 1)

  1. ① Submited M.A. thesis in KNU and passed the oral defense in a public presentation
  2. ② Published an article in a journal indexed in KCI or A&HCI and earned GPA 4.0 or above

    ***NOTE

    1. 1) The student is either the first author or a corresponding author.
    2. 2) The dissertation is published as a regular publication (not on-line preview).

5. Thesis publication requirement for Ph.D. degree (You may need academic help from your advisor)

  1. ① Ph.D. students admitted since the year of 2012 need to publish at least one article either in a journal indexed by KCI or A&HCI.
  2. ② Ph.D. students admitted between the year of 2008 and 2011 need to publish at least one article either in a KCI or KCI candidate journals or A&HCI journals.

6. Thesis Evaluation

  1. ① Time limits: M.A. in 5 years after completing the whole course / Ph.D. in 9 years after completion
  2. ② Apply online at K-Cloud system [M.A. by April or October / Ph.D. by March or September]

7. School life

  1. ① If your e-mail address and phone number is changed, please tell the administrative assistant, Rachel ASAP.
  2. ② Always check the bulletin board, KNU homepage, and E.L.L department homepage.
  3. ③ You are the one who is responsible for ‘registering classes, paying for the tuition fee, and applying for the qualifying exam. If your need help, please make an appointment for help and the the student assistants at the department will help you.
  4. ④ To assist you, the departmental help is available (by student assistants)on Tuesday and Wednesday 1 - 2 p.m. During winter and summer vacation periods, you can also email me or send me a text message to make an appointment at the department office.
  5. ⑤ Please visit the international office in KNU or immigration office to ask about the Visa.
  6. ⑥ If you have any question related with your school affairs, please do not ask your friends in other departments, but Rachel first. :)
